During an appearance on Channels Television’s *Sunrise Daily* on Friday, Onuoha defended his ability to conduct a fair and impartial election, dismissing allegations of bias due to his relationship with Wike.

These remarks follow a request from Tony Aziegbemi, chairman of the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who had called for Onuoha’s redeployment, questioning his capacity to ensure neutrality. In response, Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), stated that the commission would not redeploy Onuoha and advised the PDP to focus on the election rather than the REC.

Oyekanmi emphasized that INEC has implemented measures to ensure transparency in the electoral process. Onuoha, for his part, stressed that his familial connection to Wike should not cast doubt on his competence, highlighting his qualifications and previous experience.

“Yes, I am a cousin to the minister, but that does not disqualify me from performing my duties,” Onuoha said. “Before my appointment, I was vetted by the Senate, confirmed, and posted to Edo. No one raised concerns about my family ties until now. I am an Associate Professor of Law, and I have served as an electoral commissioner in Rivers State without any complaints.”

He further challenged the political parties to provide any concrete evidence of bias or misconduct. “I ask the political parties in Edo to tell me what I have done wrong. I am committed to overseeing a free and fair election,” he declared.

Onuoha assured that preparations for the election were complete, with sensitive materials distributed in the presence of political party representatives. “The campaign period is over. Now, we are focused on the election. INEC is ready, and the people of Edo will have a transparent and credible election tomorrow,” he concluded.
