The Edo State House of Assembly has undergone a leadership shake-up, appointing Jonathan Aigbokhan (APC–Esan West) as the new Majority Leader, following the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s emergence as the dominant party in the chamber.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This development comes after the APC officially notified the Assembly in March of its new majority status, achieved through the defection of four lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP). With 13 members now in its caucus, the APC has overtaken the PDP, which holds 11 seats.

At Monday’s plenary in Benin, Speaker Blessing Agbebaku read a letter from the APC leadership naming new principal officers. The letter confirmed the appointments of Aigbokhan as Majority Leader, Addeh Isibor as Deputy Majority Leader, and Mustapha Lecky as Chief Whip.

However, the nomination of Richard Edosa (APC–Oredo West) as Deputy Chief Whip was rescinded, as the House does not officially recognize the role. Edosa, formerly the sole LP member, recently defected to the APC.

Despite the APC holding a majority, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker roles are still held by members of the minority PDP. Following the announcement, Speaker Agbebaku noted that the PDP would soon submit its list of new principal officers.

Calling for cooperation, he emphasized, “What matters is that we all work together to ensure the success of Governor Monday Okpebholo.”
