The suspects were exposed on February 2 in Ugbiyokho community during an investigation into a case of obtaining money under false pretenses. Police Public Relations Officer Chidi Nwabuzor disclosed that the women were duped under the guise of receiving spiritual assistance for their failing businesses. Ganiyu and Oluwaseun allegedly obtained N850,000 from Joy Akhiobare and N26,000 from Ijeoma Blessing Kalu.
Detectives recovered a charm used by the suspects to intimidate the victims, warning them of dire consequences if they reported the scam. Ganiyu Lukman, one of the culprits from Ekiti State, admitted to being a fake herbalist and confessed to defrauding the women of N236,000. He explained that he was approached by one of the victims seeking help for her marriage issues, and later, her friend sought his assistance for a money ritual.
The suspects were paraded in Benin City, where Ganiyu Lukman expressed remorse for his actions. The police investigation further revealed the extent of the fraud, and the recovered charm is considered crucial evidence in the case.
