This was stated in a press release made available to Naija News on Monday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua. According to him, the successful hosting of over 20 APC governors in Benin City during the weekend was far more than an exercise in logistics—it was a bold political statement.
Itua noted that the meeting underscored Edo’s evolution from a fringe player to a major political force in the national landscape, thanks to Governor Okpebholo’s rising profile.
He described the event as more than just a gathering of governors, calling it a powerful mix of strategic symbolism, bold leadership, and expanding influence. “By every political metric, the PGF regional meeting in Edo was a landmark moment,” he emphasized.
The Chief Press Secretary said Okpebholo has not only redefined Edo’s political narrative but has also positioned himself prominently in national calculations ahead of 2027.
He revealed that Edo was carefully selected for the APC Governors’ Forum’s first South-South meeting—an indication of its growing importance in the ruling party’s internal dynamics.
“Governor Okpebholo played a masterstroke,” Itua stated. “The turnout, security arrangements, and messaging were coordinated with precision, showcasing Edo as a centre of competence and cohesion.”
Highlighting the governor’s growing influence, Itua praised his ability to foster unity, manage political coalitions, and present Edo as a model under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Governor Okpebholo has emerged as the APC’s de facto ambassador in the South-South,” he declared.
The statement continued:
“In politics, perception is often more powerful than reality. What Nigeria witnessed in Benin was the emergence of a leader who understands both governance and the political theatre it demands. From infrastructure projects to reforms and security, Okpebholo isn’t just constructing roads—he’s building political relevance. And the APC is taking note.”
Itua stressed that the political symbolism of the PGF gathering echoed beyond Edo, projecting a message of strength for the APC and signaling a new era for Okpebholo.
“In this pre-2027 phase, where the APC is realigning quietly, it’s clear that the South-South now has a governor who commands not just local support but also respect among his peers. That kind of political capital isn’t just earned—it’s used strategically,” he noted.
He described Okpebholo as the pioneer APC governor in the oil-rich South-South under the current dispensation, placing him at the heart of the party’s national balancing efforts.
“With a strong hold on governance, increasing popularity, and unifying leadership, Okpebholo is becoming a political force that cannot be ignored. If 2023 taught Nigeria anything, it’s that no geopolitical zone should be underestimated. With Okpebholo at the helm in Edo, the APC may have finally found its foothold in a region previously dominated by the opposition,” Itua asserted.
He concluded, “The message from Benin is loud and unmistakable: Senator Monday Okpebholo is more than just Edo’s governor—he is now the face of South-South resurgence within the APC. His diplomatic political style, graceful hosting, and visionary leadership are earning him admiration and positioning him as a significant figure in shaping Nigeria’s political future. The recent PGF meeting wasn’t just an event—it was a signal of trust, confidence, and things to come.”
