Speaking at a press conference on Friday, the acting Chairman of the state APC, Jarrett Tenebe, expressed concern that the state was already burdened with a debt profile of N135bn and $35.6bn. Tenebe criticized the governor for seeking a new facility of N17.5bn, stating that it was not clearly outlined in the budget and lacked associated project details.
“The citizens of Edo State have endured hardship under the Obaseki-led administration, and we strongly urge the government to cease these borrowings, which seem to benefit the governor and his associates rather than addressing the state’s infrastructural decay,” Tenebe emphasized.
He called on the people of Edo State to reject the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and support the APC as a viable alternative. In response, Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, dismissed Tenebe’s allegations, describing them as baseless and ridiculous.
Nehikhare clarified that the debt figure mentioned by Tenebe was inaccurate and emphasized that the recent loan approval was intended for various projects, including the procurement of electric buses to enhance the state’s transportation system. He criticized Tenebe’s approach, stating that opposition politics requires intelligence and tact, not unfounded accusations.
