The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, has assured Nigerians that despite the challenges posed by the harsh economic conditions and rising prices of essential commodities, a positive change is on the horizon.
Edun emphasized that the country’s economy will continue to progress under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, with a primary focus on what is in the best interest of Nigeria and the alleviation of the citizens’ hardships.
During the burial ceremony of the late Dr. Onaolapo Soleye, a former Finance Minister, held at Owu Baptist Church in Abeokuta, Edun conveyed optimism about the nation’s economic prospects. He stated, “By God’s grace, under the able leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we will move forward with this economy, and Nigerians will smile again.”
Governor Dapo Abiodun, also present at the ceremony, pledged to honor the memory of the late minister by immortalizing him for his significant contributions to the nation’s economic development.
Abiodun highlighted Soleye’s achievements, mentioning his role in the establishment of Oodua Investment Group during his tenure as Commissioner for Industries. The governor also pointed out Soleye’s contributions to the development of Ogun State in various capacities, including Commissioner for Trade, Industries, and Cooperatives, as well as Works and Housing and later Finance.
In a commitment to preserve Soleye’s legacy, Governor Abiodun announced plans to name a notable structure after the late minister, seeking input from former President Olusegun Obasanjo for the appropriate choice. Abiodun stated, “I will be dialoguing with Baba Obasanjo. Because we are building something in finance, trade, and investment, I will decide with Baba Obasanjo which of those edifices we are going to name the Onaolapo Soleye edifice.”
The late Soleye, who served as finance minister from 1984 to 1985 under the military regime of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, was remembered for his dedication to the nation’s economic stability, including his resistance against the devaluation of the naira and efforts to ensure the production of new currency notes.
