EFCC Chairman Expresses Concern Over Allegations Of Bribery Amongst Investigators

Olukoyede acknowledged the unfavorable public opinion surrounding EFCC investigators, deeming it embarrassing for the agency. He issued a stern warning that such behavior would no longer be tolerated under his leadership, emphasizing his commitment to taking decisive action against investigators involved in bribery.
He stated, “The craze and quest for gratification, bribes, and other compromises by some of our investigators are becoming too embarrassing and this must not continue.” To enforce discipline, integrity, and responsibility, Olukoyede emphasized that he would not hesitate to use strict measures against any staff engaged in misconduct.
The EFCC chairman disclosed that the Department of Internal Affairs had been directed to intensify its efforts in monitoring staff activities to maintain the agency’s image. Additionally, he reassured the staff about ongoing efforts to improve their welfare, promising positive changes in the coming year.
Olukoyede reflected on the challenges faced by the EFCC in the past year but highlighted the stabilization of the system and the introduction of new initiatives and policies following his appointment as chairman in the last quarters of 2023.
He outlined the agency’s three-pronged agenda, focusing on the mandate of the EFCC to drive economic development and combat corruption. Olukoyede stressed the crucial role of the EFCC in the nation’s growth and development, urging staff to remain steadfast in their commitment to the agency’s mission.
The second plank of the policy direction involves promoting responsible, accountable, and transparent governance at various levels, as well as enhancing Nigeria’s international image for foreign direct investments. Olukoyede emphasized the importance of preventive measures against corruption, adherence to the rule of law, and engaging the public in the fight against corruption.
The chairman highlighted the need for a transactional credit system to deter corruption, encouraging staff to familiarize themselves with the commission’s reviewed guidelines for arrests and bail. He emphasized that arrest and bail procedures would align with international best practices, reflecting the agency’s commitment to civilized law enforcement.
In conclusion, Olukoyede reminded staff of their privilege to be part of the EFCC, emphasizing the responsibility that comes with it. He quoted the Latin phrase “noblesse oblige,” signifying that nobility demands responsibility, urging staff to dignify their role with proportionate responsibility. Olukoyede wished the staff success in the New Year, emphasizing the duty and obligation that accompanies the privilege of being EFCC staff.
