Labor Union NLC Emphasizes Link Between New Minimum Wage And Cost Of Living

Reports suggest that labor is diligently working to present a robust wage demand that can withstand scrutiny from both government and private sector employers. The key driver for this demand will be the cost of living and other socio-economic factors prevalent across the country.
To ensure that the demand is grounded in data rather than sentiment, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has instructed its state councils to gather comprehensive data on the cost of living in towns and local government areas. In a circular dated January 17, 2024, the NLC’s General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, emphasized the importance of accurate data in negotiating a fair and equitable national minimum wage. State councils are tasked with using data collection forms provided by the NLC to gather information from various regions.
The circular urged state councils to leverage online platforms for efficient and streamlined data collection, emphasizing the importance of prompt action. The collected data will be summarized using a designated form and sent to the national headquarters to assist the Congress’ National Minimum Wage Negotiating Council during deliberations. The deadline for submission is set for the end of January 2024.
In parallel developments, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, assured trade unions, including the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Congress of University Academics (CONUA), that the Federal Government is actively working to fulfill its promises to labor. Specifically, she confirmed that the payment of the outstanding N35,000 wage award is underway and will be completed within a short period.
These initiatives underscore the collaborative efforts between organized labor and the government to ensure fair wages reflective of the cost of living, setting the stage for constructive negotiations in the near future.
