EFCC Clarifies Status Of Former Governors Amidst Viral Investigation List

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released a statement disavowing a false narrative circulating in the media. Reports alleged that the EFCC had published a roster of 58 former governors under investigation for purported corruption, with a headline declaring: “EFCC Releases Full List of 58 Ex-Governors that Embezzled N2.187 Trillion.”

However, the EFCC has made it clear that this assertion is entirely baseless and malicious, as no such list has been disseminated, and no discussions have occurred with any media outlet regarding the inquiry into former governors.

In a statement issued by Dayo Oyewale, the Head of Media and Publicity of the Commission, on Sunday, the EFCC urged the public to disregard the report, emphasizing its falsity and misleading nature.

Furthermore, the commission advised the media to authenticate facts and verify information with them before publishing, to prevent the propagation of erroneous information.

Regarding the corruption case involving N70 billion against the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, the EFCC clarified that the investigation is ongoing. This clarification was made by the EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, while addressing protesters from the APC Akida Forum at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Friday.

Uwujaren assured the protesters that the anti-graft agency would continue to pursue the corruption case against Matawalle, who served as the governor of Zamfara State from 2019 to 2023. He reiterated that the EFCC does not close cases once investigations commence, affirming that their demands would be duly investigated.

Uwujaren remarked, “I want to commend members of the APC Akida Forum for this peaceful protest. It is within your right to protest. The constitution guarantees the right of free expression and you have done that today. I want to assure you all that EFCC does not close cases. Once we open an investigation into a case, we will not close such a matter. So I assure you that this petition will be looked into. Thank you very much.”
