EFCC Clarifies: Why Yahaya Bello Remains Untouched By Police – Presidency Speaks

Bello, who served as Kogi governor from May 2015 to May 2023, has been declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged financial crimes totaling N80.2 billion.

Despite multiple attempts by the EFCC to apprehend him at his residence, he has been sheltered by his successor, Usman Ododo. Onanuga spoke about this issue on Channels Television’s Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, noting the difficulties posed by Ododo’s immunity as a sitting governor.

“It’s a bit complicated,” Onanuga stated. “The EFCC is a federal agency seeking to arrest Yahaya Bello, but he is hiding under the protection of Governor Ododo, who enjoys immunity. If Bello remains in Ododo’s house, the police cannot act without violating that immunity.”

He likened the situation to diplomatic immunity, referencing the case of Julian Assange, who took refuge in an embassy in the UK. “Just as security agents could not act against him there, the EFCC faces similar limitations in this case,” he added.

Onanuga emphasized that the combination of Ododo’s immunity and Bello’s alleged hiding place has created significant challenges for law enforcement agencies in executing the arrest.
