EFCC Impersonator Busted In Kwara For Defrauding Individuals Through Deceptive Tactics

An individual, identified as Akogun Rasheed Usman, was apprehended for allegedly impersonating an officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). This alleged fraudster, as per the Ilorin Zonal Command of the EFCC, purportedly engaged in defrauding victims by falsely claiming he could assist them in resolving their cases with the anti-graft agency.

The scammer’s activities came to light when the Ilorin Command received intelligence concerning his illicit operations. Usman, a native of Babanla in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, allegedly represented himself as an EFCC officer and obtained N500,000 from Mrs. Khadizah Abdullahi. Mrs. Abdullahi, a parent of two suspects detained by the EFCC for internet fraud offenses, became suspicious when Usman failed to fulfill his promise of facilitating her sons’ release on bail.

Following his arrest on Thursday, March 27, 2024, at the General Hospital in the Taiwo-Oke area of Ilorin, Usman claimed to be employed in the Library Department of the Kwara State College of Education, Oro.

Mrs. Abdullahi recounted her ordeal, noting discrepancies in Usman’s behavior during their visit to the EFCC office. She observed that Usman did not adhere to the usual protocols expected of EFCC officers, such as saluting fellow officers. Instead, he allegedly conducted their interactions without the customary formalities.

Rather than securing her sons’ release, Usman purportedly took Mrs. Abdullahi to an external location, where he demanded additional funds to facilitate the bail process. It was during this transaction, while attempting to collect an additional N200,000, that Usman was apprehended by law enforcement authorities.
