EFCC Interrogates UNILAG Dean In Connection To Alleged N400 Million Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has initiated an investigation into allegations of financial impropriety involving Prof. Ishaya Tanko, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos in Plateau State.

Reports indicate that Prof. Tanko has been accused of diverting a substantial sum, totaling three hundred and fifty-five million naira (N355,000,000.00), into various private accounts. Allegedly, these funds were directed towards settling rent liabilities for the university’s liaison offices in Lagos and Abuja, facilitated through a company named Kolo Global Concept Ltd, purportedly owned by the VC.

An internal petition from university staff to the Minister of Education has brought these allegations to light, suggesting that the university’s previous administrations had already acquired the properties in question. Additionally, concerns were raised regarding the absence of any contractual agreement between the university and Kolo Global Concept Ltd at the time of the fund transfer.

Further complicating matters, disagreements arose among involved parties regarding the distribution of these funds, leading to a stalemate. In response to these allegations, the EFCC’s Zonal Commander in Abuja, Adebayo Adeniyi, issued a letter dated March 19, 2024, inviting Prof. Tanko for questioning.

The EFCC requested the VC’s presence along with Dr. Yusuf Abdullahi, the University’s Deputy Dean of Student Affairs, for an interview at its Abuja Zonal Command. Additionally, Prof. Tanko was asked to provide a response to a previous letter dated December 27, 2023, pertaining to the investigation.

According to sources, Prof. Tanko appeared before EFCC operatives on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, where he underwent extensive questioning regarding the allegations.

As the investigation unfolds, it underscores the EFCC’s commitment to upholding transparency and accountability in financial matters within academic institutions and beyond.
