EFCC Opens Up About Obasanjo Library Raid Rumors
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted claims that the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, was the focus of its recent sting operation that led to the arrest of 93 suspected internet fraudsters.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The management of OOPL had earlier condemned the late-night raid and the arrest of guests at its guest house, describing the incident as a deliberate attack on former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The Library further demanded ₦3.5 billion in damages and a public apology within seven days, threatening legal action if unmet.
In a statement on Thursday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale clarified that the arrests occurred at a hotel situated within the OOPL premises, not the library itself. He explained that the operation was based on intelligence indicating the suspects were hosting a pool party to celebrate alleged fraudulent activities.
According to him, the party had initially been scheduled for two other locations but was relocated to the OOPL hotel in an attempt to evade detection. Profiling of the suspects revealed that nearly all were implicated in crimes such as impersonation, identity theft, and internet fraud.
“Following the arrest of 93 suspected internet fraudsters at a hotel within the OOPL precincts, the EFCC will on Friday, August 15, 2025, arraign 23 of them before Justice D. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos,” Oyewale stated.
He added that the arraignment would be conducted in batches, and the remaining suspects would face trial subsequently. According to Oyewale, the suspects deliberately shifted their gathering to the OOPL premises, believing it would shield them from arrest, but stressed that the former president’s facility was never a target — the suspects were.
