Ekiti Court Sentences Four To Death For Armed Robbery And Murder

Four individuals, namely Ogunleye Sola, Adebayo Ebenezer, Lasisi Afeez, and Ojo Oba, have been sentenced to death by hanging by the Ekiti State High Court, Ado Ekiti Division. This judgment follows their conviction for crimes including armed robbery, murder, and conspiracy, which occurred on May 29, 2017, at Oyan Orete Camp, Ijan Ekiti. During the incident, the defendants robbed the camp’s occupants at gunpoint, resulting in the murder of Olasunkanmi Ramon. The court additionally sentenced the defendants to life imprisonment for attempted murder. The charges brought against them were based on provisions from the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap. R11, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004, as well as sections 319(1) and 320 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap.C16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

The prosecution, led by the Director of Public Prosecutions for Ekiti State, Julius Ajibare, presented five witnesses and seven exhibits to substantiate the case. In defense, the defendants were represented by Chris Omokhafe and Oluwaseun Banji, who provided evidence and called two witnesses.

In delivering the judgment, Justice Olukayode Ogundana found the prosecution had proven all charges beyond a reasonable doubt. Therefore, he convicted all defendants, sentencing them to death by hanging for conspiracy, armed robbery, and murder, while also imposing life imprisonment for attempted murder.
