The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Ebenezer Boluwade, emphasized the importance of the alert to safeguard farmers’ livelihoods and prevent devastating consequences.
In a statement released on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti, Boluwade warned that the virus, which is zoonotic, can be transmitted between birds and humans, posing significant risks. He highlighted the disease’s highly infectious nature and its potential to severely impact poultry farming if not controlled.
Boluwade called on stakeholders to enhance biosecurity measures on their farms, especially in light of suspected cases reported in other parts of Nigeria. Measures include regular cleaning and disinfection of clothing, footwear, equipment, and vehicles used on farms to curb the virus’s spread.
Farmers are also advised to avoid sharing equipment with other farms and to report any signs of illness or sudden deaths in their flocks to the nearest veterinary offices or the Avian Influenza Control Project Desk Office at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in Ado-Ekiti.
