In an interview with Freedom Radio Kaduna over the weekend, El-Rufai alleged that Sani converted local government allocations into foreign currency to acquire these overseas assets. El-Rufai emphasized that during his time as governor, he never interfered with local government allocations, ensuring that councils operated independently after making necessary deductions for primary education, healthcare, and other statutory obligations.
“When I was governor, I never took a kobo from local government funds. We gave them their full allocation to operate. After setting aside amounts for SUBEB, primary healthcare, and other allocations, the councils received their funds. Both the PDP and APC chairmen are alive to confirm this,” he stated.
He further alleged that under the current administration, no local government in Kaduna receives more than ₦50 million per month, claiming that the remaining funds are siphoned off and converted into dollars for property purchases abroad.
“As of now, no local government in Kaduna gets more than N50 million per month. Once the funds arrive, they divert them, exchange them into dollars, and use the money to buy properties in Seychelles, South Africa, London, and other places. They think we are unaware, but we know everything. We know how they divert the funds, we know the bureau de change…” El-Rufai said.
El-Rufai also accused Governor Sani of demanding kickbacks from contractors before awarding contracts, alleging that Sani takes 40% of contract sums as bribes.
“Uba goes to Abuja with contract documents to offer contractors and gets 40 percent in kickbacks. We know what is happening. They thought we ran the government the same way, but they are mistaken,” he alleged.
He challenged anyone who had ever given him a bribe to come forward, asserting that unlike his successor, he never personally handled contracts but delegated such responsibilities to commissioners and permanent secretaries.
“I have never stolen a kobo from anyone. If any contractor ever gave me a bribe, I challenge him to come forward. When ICPC invited many contractors, they stated they had never met me. You could execute contracts worth billions without ever seeing me as governor,” El-Rufai concluded.
