The political unrest in Rivers State has escalated with a new twist involving Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, the State House of Assembly, and various political figures.

Rivers Assembly Issues Misconduct Notice Against Governor and Deputy

On Monday, the Rivers State House of Assembly formally accused Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, of gross misconduct. This development adds to the ongoing political tensions in the oil-rich state.

The lawmakers, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, have officially sent the notice to both the Governor and his deputy, stating that their actions align with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.

“In compliance with Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and other applicable laws, we, the undersigned members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, hereby serve notice of gross misconduct by the Deputy Governor of Rivers State in her official duties,” the notice read.

This marks the beginning of impeachment proceedings against both Fubara and Odu.

APC Chieftain Blames President Tinubu for Rivers Crisis

Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has blamed President Bola Tinubu for allegedly supporting Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike in the ongoing crisis in Rivers State.

Eze’s comments came as he criticized the 27 lawmakers, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, for passing several controversial bills, including one that grants immunity to the Assembly.

These bills, such as the Rivers State House of Assembly (Powers and Privileges) Bill, 2025, which seeks to provide the Assembly with significant legislative powers, have sparked accusations of selfishness and undemocratic behavior from Eze.

Rivers Government Responds to Misconduct Allegations

In a response to the allegations of misconduct against Governor Fubara and his deputy, the Rivers State Government accused the State House of Assembly of intentionally hindering the Governor from implementing a recent Supreme Court ruling that impacts the state’s governance.

At a press briefing in Port Harcourt, Rivers State Information Commissioner Joseph Johnson reiterated that Governor Fubara is committed to upholding the Supreme Court’s judgment, despite the challenges it poses to his administration.

He highlighted ongoing efforts by the state government to engage with the Assembly, citing video evidence showing that official communications had been repeatedly ignored by the lawmakers.
