In a statement, NCFront’s Director-General, Olawale Okunniyi, praised El-Rufai’s political expertise and coalition-building abilities, particularly highlighting his role in founding the APC as a key asset in the opposition’s strategy. El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, had recently announced his defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Okunniyi emphasized El-Rufai’s negotiation skills, political clout in the North, and governance experience as pivotal elements in shaping the opposition’s approach. He noted, “El-Rufai, coming from the North and having previously worked with General Muhammadu Buhari, is a significant force. He cannot be underestimated. His ability to build coalitions, lead high-level discussions, and promote alternative platforms makes him a powerful asset.”
Opposition Aims for Coalition Finalization by July
Okunniyi also revealed that the opposition is in discussions to select the coalition’s political platform, with plans to finalize the choice by July. “The SDP is one of the options being considered, but discussions are ongoing to determine the most viable platform,” he said.
He further mentioned that El-Rufai’s defection aligns with broader efforts to build a credible alternative to the ruling APC. “It seems that El-Rufai and other APC members are working to establish their opposition platform, contributing to consultations aimed at forming a mega coalition to challenge the ruling party,” Okunniyi added.
National Political Summit to Be Held in July
Additionally, Okunniyi announced that a national political summit for opposition stakeholders is scheduled for July, during which the final decision on the coalition’s platform and structure will be made.
