El-Rufai, who recently switched from the All Progressives Congress to the Social Democratic Party, clarified that he was never politically aligned with Atiku. The former Federal Capital Territory Minister during Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration made these statements in an interview with BBC.
He explained that his decision to support Obasanjo during the dispute with Atiku was based on his belief that the former president was in the right.
“I never betrayed Atiku Abubakar because we didn’t meet in politics; we met at work. If I see that someone, regardless of who they are, didn’t do well in their work, I will tell them. I told Buhari, and I even took him to court over the new naira issue. When Obasanjo and Atiku were having issues, we, who worked with Obasanjo, analyzed the situation and concluded that Obasanjo was right. It wasn’t about north versus south; it was about who was right. Atiku and I are now together, so if I betrayed him, why are we together now?” El-Rufai stated.
Regarding the current administration, El-Rufai expressed disappointment, saying President Bola Tinubu has not been able to replicate his success as Governor of Lagos State.
“What pains me is that the government we supported and had confidence in would do well, because we saw what Tinubu achieved in Lagos despite the challenges. We all know about his issues in Chicago, but we thought that if he could replicate his success in Lagos for Nigeria, we should support him. Unfortunately, he failed,” he said.
