The decision came after an Extraordinary National Executive Council meeting on Saturday, the outcome of which was confirmed by NARD Secretary-General, Shuaibu Ibrahim, in a phone interview with Punch.

The industrial action had paralyzed healthcare services across Nigeria, with roughly 11,000 resident doctors in 91 teaching hospitals withdrawing their services over poor working conditions and unpaid allowances.

Ibrahim explained that the suspension followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Government, covering seven critical conditions set by the association. These include:

  • Reinstatement of doctors in Lokoja

  • Release of the Professional Allowance Table

  • Payment of promotion and salary arrears in certain hospitals

  • Implementation of an upgrade for doctors who passed Part I exams and met entry-level requirements

  • Introduction of the specialist allowance

  • Resolution of the Membership Certificate issue

He stated, “The strike was suspended after the MoU was signed with the Federal Government, addressing the seven conditions we outlined as prerequisites for halting the industrial action.”

According to Ibrahim, two of the seven conditions have already been fulfilled, while the remaining five are expected to be met within four weeks under the MoU.

“The Professional Allowance Table has been released, and a directive has been issued to the Head of Service that doctors’ entry level should be CONMESS 3. Therefore, the strike has been suspended immediately,” he added.

Ibrahim warned, however, that NARD would not hesitate to resume the strike if the Federal Government fails to meet the outstanding demands within the agreed timeframe. “If the remaining demands are not met within the stipulated period, we will resume the strike,” he said.
