Akpabio made the remarks during the blessing and official inauguration of the Regina Coeli Parish Rectory in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The event, attended by senior clerics and political figures, was documented in a statement released in Abuja by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom.
Reflecting on his journey from obscurity to becoming Nigeria’s number three citizen, the Senate President described his ascent as a divine testament.
“As the most ranked Christian in government, God has graciously prepared and transformed me for the responsibilities ahead. I belong to all denominations, but I am privileged and grateful to be a Catholic. Many people attend church without fully understanding its power,” he said.
He added, “If God can elevate me from being a nobody to the President of the Senate, and by extension, the third-highest citizen of this nation, He can do it for anyone who positions themselves and prepares for His blessings.”
Akpabio urged Nigerians to remain committed to serving in God’s house, emphasizing that no contribution is too small.
“Even a contribution as little as 10 kobo toward the construction of a church, once completed and put to use, is accepted by God,” he said. He further noted that supporting church projects brings him joy because “nothing is too big for our God.”
New Worship Centre at National Assembly
The Senate President also revealed plans to establish a new worship centre within the National Assembly complex.
“In the coming weeks, I will gladly invite Nigerians from all walks of life to join us in commissioning a fitting place of worship for God,” he announced.
At the event, the Catholic Bishop of Uyo, Most Rev. John Ayah, commended Akpabio and his wife, Dr. Unoma Akpabio, for their ongoing support to the church, including hosting Catholic bishops in Ikot Ekpene last September. The Bishop encouraged the Senate President to stay focused despite criticism.
“You are significant, and that is why people talk about you. Such attention is expected given your position in today’s Nigeria,” the Bishop said.
