Enugu Political Violence: NDC Member Nworie Christopher K!lled In Attack On Campaign Office
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State has confirmed the death of one of its members, Nworie Christopher, who was reportedly shot during an attack on the party’s campaign office in the Government Reserved Area of Enugu on October 10, 2026.
The party said Christopher, an indigene of Affa in Udi Local Government Area, sustained gunshot injuries when armed assailants allegedly attacked supporters gathered at the campaign office of its governorship candidate, Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa.
According to the NDC, efforts by party leaders to save Christopher’s life were unsuccessful. The party condemned the incident and called for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
On Tuesday, October 13, Ohaa led a delegation of party officials to visit the bereaved family and offer their condolences following the tragic loss.
The delegation included the party’s deputy governorship candidate, Chief Frank Omeje; state chairman, Engr. Ibuchukwu Obeta; state secretary, Hon. Emmanuel Chukwujekwu Nebo; Prof. Uche Akubue; Hon. Emeke Okeke; and the state women leader.
In a statement issued through his media aide, Hon. Sampson Ukwu, Ohaa condemned the killing, describing it as part of an alarming pattern of political violence allegedly targeting opposition members in the state.
The governorship candidate stressed that political disagreements should never result in the loss of human life, noting that Christopher had attended the gathering to support the party’s vision for Enugu State.
Ohaa also expressed sympathy for the deceased’s family, particularly his mother and twin brother, who have been left devastated by the loss. He insisted that the party would not be intimidated by violence and called for justice for Christopher and other members reportedly injured in previous attacks.
The NDC described the incident as the latest in a series of alleged attacks against its supporters. It cited an incident at a ward meeting in Obuoffia, Nkanu West Local Government Area, on September 12, 2026, where eight members reportedly sustained gunshot injuries.
The party also referenced allegations that its supporters had been tear-gassed, shot at and assaulted during another incident at the airport.
Expressing concern over the reported incidents, the NDC warned that continued violence against political gatherings could undermine citizens’ ability to participate peacefully in the democratic process.
The party called on the Inspector-General of Police and other relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough, independent and transparent investigation into Christopher’s killing and the earlier incident in Obuoffia.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the NDC is demanding accountability and stronger protection for political gatherings in Enugu State, as concerns grow over the reported attacks on opposition supporters ahead of future electoral activities. The allegations surrounding the incidents require investigation by the relevant authorities.
