Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Etanabene suggested that the recent APC victories in Ondo and Edo states had unsettled some opposition members, prompting them to reconsider their political future. He stressed that there was no crisis within the Labour Party, contrary to the reasons cited by the defectors.

“The four lawmakers who recently defected are loyal to the Julius Abure faction of the Labour Party,” Etanabene stated. “There is no leadership crisis in the Labour Party. If there were such issues, I can tell you that the majority of those who left are people who support Julius Abure’s leadership.”

Etanabene also argued that the defections are part of a broader trend he expects to continue among opposition parties, citing the recent APC wins in Edo and Ondo as a sign that many are positioning themselves for the 2027 elections. “What happened in Edo and Ondo is concerning, and it suggests that the APC is set for a strong 2027. People are already positioning themselves for the future,” he added.

On Thursday, four lawmakers — Chinedu Okere (Owerri Municipal/Owerri North/Owerri West Constituency), Mathew Donatus (Kaura Federal Constituency of Kaduna), Akiba Bassey (Calabar Municipal/Odukpani Constituency), and Esosa Iyawe (Oredo Federal Constituency of Edo) — formally defected from the Labour Party to the APC.

Asked whether he himself would consider leaving the Labour Party, Etanabene ruled out such a possibility. He also expressed concerns over the state of Nigeria’s electoral system, lamenting that votes often do not count. He urged for reform and called on politicians to adopt a more moral approach to politics, stressing the importance of loyalty to the party that gave them the opportunity to hold public office.
