Every Nigerian Can Support Us — NDC Reveals Bold Grassroots Funding Strategy

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has disclosed plans to raise funds for its 2027 election campaign through contributions from ordinary Nigerians, with individuals expected to support the party with as little as ₦1,000 or ₦2,000.

The party’s National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, said the initiative is aimed at reducing the influence of wealthy individuals and political financiers in Nigeria’s electoral process.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Dickson made the disclosure during an interview on Arise News, where he explained that the party wants Nigerians at the grassroots to play a direct role in financing its political activities.

The former Bayelsa State governor argued that allowing democracy to depend heavily on wealthy individuals could give moneyed interests excessive influence over political decisions and governance.

He said the NDC would instead encourage ordinary citizens to make modest financial contributions to support the party’s activities, stressing that similar models of grassroots political funding are practised in other parts of the world.

Dickson, who represents Bayelsa West in the Senate, also maintained that the NDC does not rely on funds from government treasuries to finance its activities. The party has previously stated that its operations are supported through donations, levies and contributions from members, aspirants, stakeholders and well-wishers, with funds paid into designated party accounts.

He further disclosed that the party was consulting on the composition of its presidential campaign council and would announce its members after the process is concluded.

Dickson said the NDC was determined to avoid the kind of situation where a political structure is announced and subsequently withdrawn, noting that the party wants to ensure adequate consultations before unveiling its campaign team.

He also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies and other relevant institutions to ensure that the 2027 general elections are conducted in a free, fair and credible manner.

According to him, the NDC intends to take its case directly to Nigerians and vigorously compete for every vote during the next general election.

The development comes as the NDC intensifies preparations for the 2027 elections and works to build a nationwide political structure ahead of the polls.
