A high-ranking federal government official informed Vanguard on Thursday that Bello had offended certain factions within the APC during his tenure with decisions that were disapproved of by the party. However, due to his close ties with the Buhari administration, the party was unable to take any action against him at the time.

The official elaborated that despite Bello’s significant standing in the ruling APC, some of his actions while in office had displeased forces closely associated with the Presidency, and they are now unwilling to let him off the hook without consequences.

One of the contentious issues that might come back to haunt Yahaya Bello is his ambitious campaign for the presidency while Bola Tinubu was the favored candidate to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari. Despite eventually aligning with President Buhari and gaining his support during the Kogi State governorship election, there are lingering concerns among those uncomfortable with Bello’s opposition to the APC’s zoning arrangement and the perception that he may still harbor presidential ambitions in 2027.

Furthermore, Bello’s denial of the existence of Covid-19 and opposition to federal government measures to combat the pandemic had previously caused embarrassment. Those who suffered economic and financial losses due to the state’s response to the pandemic are reportedly unhappy with the former governor.

In addition, posters recently appeared at the APC Secretariat suggesting Bello’s interest in replacing the recently elected APC National Chairman, raising eyebrows among powerful elements within the party.

Vanguard also learned that the last governorship election in Kogi State, where Bello played a role in installing his successor, exacerbated animosity within the APC and tribal divisions in the state. Some APC leaders who supported the opposition candidate in the election, as a form of protest against Bello, remain discontented with him and are opposed to his potential influence within the party.

The sudden amendment of charges by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to include Bello in a case involving the alleged laundering of N80 billion funds belonging to the Kogi State Government adds another layer of uncertainty. It remains unclear whether Bello’s immunity as a former governor played a role in initially excluding him from the charges or if other factors influenced his subsequent inclusion in the amended charge, despite the alleged offenses dating back to 2015 when he was not in office.
