The meeting, held at Lagos House, Marina, was attended by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, lawmakers, and party leaders.

During the session, several lawmakers shared their experiences under the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who was impeached on Monday.

A source who spoke with The Sun Newspaper revealed that one legislator recounted a particularly distressing experience, stating that he almost considered suicide due to Obasa’s alleged mistreatment.

“For challenging the seat of Speaker against Obasa after the election, I nearly committed suicide because of the way I was treated. None of my colleagues dared to communicate or associate with me during Obasa’s tenure—nobody would greet me or respond to my greetings. I was ostracized. If not for the constituents I represent, I would have distanced myself from the House,” the lawmaker reportedly said.

GAC Approves Leadership Transition

Following the briefing, GAC endorsed the change in leadership. The new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, who previously served as Deputy Speaker, confirmed the decision while addressing journalists after the meeting.

Meranda, accompanied by her colleagues, stated, “We sought the blessings of the GAC and our fellow lawmakers. We are united in moving the Assembly forward and ensuring the progress of Lagos State.”

Meanwhile, the Conference 57 of Local Government and Local Council Development Area Chairmen extended congratulations to Meranda on her historic election as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

In a statement signed by the group’s Chairman, Alabi Kolade David, and Public Relations Officer, Olusesan Daini, the council chairmen commended Meranda’s dedication, competence, and commitment to service.

They also pledged their support and collaboration with the new Speaker to ensure a successful tenure.
