Obasanjo rejected the idea that every leader is made by God, stating, “I don’t accept that. A leader can also be made by Satan.” He referenced the biblical story of Job, where Satan, while challenging God’s praise of Job’s righteousness, revealed that Satan too has influence and power, though he lacks salvation. “We must accept that Satan is real and has power,” Obasanjo emphasized, cautioning against underestimating Satan’s influence.

When asked whether he considered himself an “accidental” leader, Obasanjo explained that while most leaders are prepared and positioned by God, there is a higher likelihood of success when leadership is divinely ordained. He added that individuals who seek leadership for their own reasons, without divine intervention, may not experience the same success.

Obasanjo’s remarks come just days after Catholic Archbishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, also expressed skepticism about the preparedness of Nigerian leaders. Kukah had stated that President Bola Tinubu, former President Muhammadu Buhari, and other past leaders were not fully prepared for leadership roles and had found themselves in power “by accident.” He criticized the lack of knowledge in Nigerian leadership, arguing that this deficiency has contributed to the dysfunction of democracy under successive administrations.
