LASU ASUU Warns Students Against Disinformation As Strike Kicks OffThe Lagos State University (LASU) branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on students to ignore recent claims by the university management and the Students’ Union that normal academic activities are continuing, despite the ongoing industrial actions by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Related Institutions (NASU).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

ASUU-LASU began an indefinite strike on December 6, 2024, in protest of the government’s failure to implement the promised 25% to 35% salary increase for its members, which was approved in January 2023.

In a statement released by ASUU-LASU Chairman Prof. Ibrahim Bakare and Secretary Sylvester Idowu, the union expressed its disappointment that while the salary increment has been implemented at federal universities and 18 other state universities, LASU staff have yet to benefit from the adjustment.

The union also highlighted a longstanding salary disparity between LASU staff and their counterparts at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUST) and the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), which existed before these institutions were upgraded to university status. Despite the establishment of a committee to address the issue, ASUU-LASU noted that the government’s failure to implement the committee’s recommendations had worsened the situation.

The statement titled “ASUU-LASU EMBARKS ON A TOTAL AND INDEFINITE STRIKE” reads, in part:

“This is to notify the University Community and the general public that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos State University Branch, has commenced a total and indefinite strike action, effective from December 6, 2024, to protest the non-implementation of the Federal Government-approved salary increment of 25%/35% for our members since January 2023.

“We note with dismay that this agreement has been implemented in all Federal Universities and eighteen (18) State Universities as of today.”

Additionally, the statement pointed out the salary discrepancies between LASU staff and those at LASUST and LASUED, stressing the need for the harmonization of salaries. The union criticized the government for failing to act on the recommendations of the committee formed to address these disparities.

ASUU-LASU urged students to remain calm, display maturity, and understand the gravity of the situation. The union further advised students to disregard a press release issued by the LASU Students’ Union on December 7, 2024, which claimed that activities at the university were ongoing despite the industrial actions by SSANU and NASU.

The union emphasized that students should not get involved in the welfare issues of staff and government, which do not directly concern them. ASUU-LASU also reassured students that the strike action aligns with the decision of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of all the staff unions at the university, and that a letter of notification had been sent to both the Vice Chancellor and the Lagos State Governor.

“We thank you for your understanding and cooperation,” the statement concluded.
