The contentious interview, initially reported by a newspaper, claimed that Alison-Madueke, currently facing corruption charges in the UK, expressed a desire to return to Nigeria and confess. However, the newspaper has retracted the story, and an unverified screenshot suggesting EFCC’s involvement in amplifying the report on Instagram has circulated.

In an exclusive interview with PREMIUM TIMES, Alison-Madueke dismissed the reports as “fake” and “concocted,” emphatically stating that she did not grant any interview and did not make the statements attributed to her.

The alleged interview had Alison-Madueke imploring President Bola Tinubu to allow her return, claiming to be a “born-again Christian” grappling with cancer. These claims were vehemently denied by Alison-Madueke, who asserted that she did not speak to the press after a medical visit in London.

The EFCC also distanced itself from the controversy, with spokesperson Dele Oyewale clarifying that the report was not from the EFCC. Despite this denial, the Zamfara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) criticized the anti-graft agency and demanded an apology for allowing fake news on its platform.

Alison-Madueke, facing corruption charges in both Nigeria and the UK, has been under intense scrutiny for alleged financial misconduct during her tenure as petroleum minister from 2010 to 2015. The Federal High Court in Abuja issued an arrest warrant against her in January 2022, and she is also facing bribery charges in a London court. The unfolding saga continues to draw conflicting statements and reactions from various quarters.
