Experts Urge Broad Strategy To Combat Corruption

Experts are urging both federal and state governments in Nigeria to adopt a comprehensive strategy to address corruption, which they believe is hindering the country’s economic growth. Dr. Umar Yakubu, Executive Director of the Centre, stressed the need for a holistic approach to tackle corruption, noting that it extends beyond bribery and procurement to include issues like conflicts of interest. He highlighted the importance of addressing these different facets of corruption at all levels of government—federal, state, and local.

Prof. Mohammed Ladan, Director-General of the Nigeria Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, also spoke at the event, emphasizing the need to bolster cross-sectoral capacities to combat corruption. He cautioned that the new fiscal autonomy granted to local governments might lead to challenges if their capacity for implementing fiscal transparency measures is not improved.

Nkemdilim Okereke, Programme Officer of the Rule of Law and Empowerment Initiative, highlighted the need to reinforce democratic principles and anti-corruption efforts. She stressed the importance of protecting fundamental rights such as freedom of speech, religion, assembly, and peaceful protest, and underscored the need for active citizen participation and an independent judiciary.
