Explosive Claim: Oby Ezekwesili Says ‘We Don’t Trust Your Promises’ To INEC Official
Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has expressed concerns about the credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (Independent National Electoral Commission).
In a post shared on , she said she is troubled by what she described as a lack of commitment to public interest among some individuals responsible for overseeing elections.
Ezekwesili criticised Nigeria’s political leadership, urging citizens to take greater responsibility in demanding improved governance and stronger electoral integrity.
She questioned the quality of leadership across key institutions, including the National Assembly, the executive arm of government, and INEC, arguing that there is a widespread lack of dedication to public service among political actors.
She stated that meaningful change would only be possible if citizens collectively demand better leadership and accountability in the political system.
Ezekwesili also questioned whether credible institutions could be sustained under current conditions, suggesting that those tasked with running INEC may not always prioritise the public good.
She further revealed that during a town hall meeting in Abuja in March, she directly confronted INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan, telling him that citizens do not trust promises of credible elections.
According to her, Nigerians must take a more active role in shaping governance by holding leaders accountable and demanding reforms.
Ezekwesili warned that continued public inaction could enable further decline in governance standards, stressing that citizens must eventually take a stand against what she described as ongoing failures in leadership.
