Eziukwu Market Shut Down By NAFDAC Over ₦5 Billion In Counterfeit GoodsThe National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has closed down 150 shops at Eziukwu Market in Aba, Abia State, following the discovery of counterfeit and expired products. NAFDAC’s Director General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, confirmed that goods valued at ₦5 billion were destroyed during the operation.

On Wednesday, NAFDAC revealed that the market had been heavily involved in the large-scale production and distribution of fake and expired goods, including beverages, carbonated drinks, wines, spirits, vegetable oils, and revalidated food items like noodles, powdered milk, and yoghurt. The sting operation took place on December 16th and 17th.

According to NAFDAC, the operation uncovered a significant network of counterfeit goods. Dr. Martins Iluyomade, Director of NAFDAC’s South-East Zone, expressed disappointment over the ongoing illegal activities in the market, despite a commitment made by market leaders in December 2023 to expose counterfeiters.

Professor Adeyeye reaffirmed NAFDAC’s zero tolerance for the sale of substandard and counterfeit products, emphasizing the agency’s dedication to protecting public health. She also reiterated the agency’s commitment to finding a permanent solution to the widespread issue of counterfeit goods in markets.
