DAILY POST reports that residents have endured a complete blackout for several days, crippling mini-businesses like barbing and food grinding. Many small operators are unable to afford fuel due to rising prices.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has stated that the ongoing power outages in parts of Northern Nigeria are expected to continue, citing security challenges that hinder the repair of crucial transmission lines. TCN noted that efforts to restore electricity through alternative means will not fully resolve the situation anytime soon.
With no sign of power restoration, some residents have turned to begging as a means of survival.
Mr. Joseph Musa, an ice water seller, expressed that he finds it more honorable to beg than to steal. “I approach individuals for help to get by. While I can endure hunger, my children cannot; they cry whenever they feel hungry,” he said.
Mrs. Rose Benjamin, who dresses corporately and stands at bus stops to ask for help, shared, “I make sure to look presentable, which often garners admiration. Some drivers stop to offer me a ride, and I use that opportunity to request assistance since my husband is unemployed.”
Joel Adegbe mentioned that he seeks out the homes of acquaintances for help. “I sometimes get lucky, as some people generously offer me money, food, and other gifts,” he added.
