Fake Alert! WAEC Disowns Viral List Of Schools Linked To Withheld 2026 Results
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed as fake a viral letter claiming that the results of students from 50 schools across Nigeria were withheld over alleged examination malpractice in the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The document, dated August 2 and purportedly signed by the Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, alleged that the affected schools had been directed to submit detailed reports on the alleged malpractice within 14 days or risk further sanctions.
According to the widely circulated letter, the council had withheld the results of candidates from the listed schools pending investigations into reported examination irregularities.
However, WAEC denied issuing the document, describing it as false and urging members of the public to disregard it.
In a statement posted on its official X account on Wednesday, the examination body said the letter did not originate from the council.
“FAKE NEWS ALERT: Please disregard the message below. It did not originate from WAEC,” the council stated while sharing a copy of the viral document.
The clarification came just hours after WAEC officially released the 2026 WASSCE results for school candidates across the country.
