The arrest, as disclosed by the NCS spokesperson, CSC Abdullahi Maiwada, was the result of intelligence gathered by the Customs Police Unit. According to the statement, Abdul-Rahman Ibrahim falsely posed as the Comptroller-General of Customs, Chief of Staff to the President, and the Secretary of the Ministry of Interior.
The statement emphasized that the suspect had duped numerous unsuspecting citizens by soliciting money from them for the issuance of fake ‘job appointment letters,’ thereby extorting over N1 million from his victims. The National Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the NCS highlighted that this arrest demonstrates the continuous efforts of the Nigeria Customs Service in combating individuals who exploit its name for fraudulent activities.
Abdul-Rahman Ibrahim, upon arrest, confessed to his involvement in the fraudulent activities and provided information about accomplices involved in the operation. This led to further investigations aimed at arresting and prosecuting those involved.
The suspect was discovered in possession of counterfeit documents, including forged Customs and NSCDC appointment letters, as well as fake introduction letters purportedly signed by high-ranking government officials. The statement also noted that similar incidents had been reported in the past, such as the arrest of a fake woman customs officer, Rakiya Musa, in June 2023, for swindling unsuspecting members of the public.
In December 2023, the NCS management had previously warned the public that there was no ongoing recruitment exercise within the service and cautioned citizens about fake recruitment advertisements circulating on social media platforms.
