Earlier reports revealed that armed security operatives raided the NLC headquarters on Wednesday night. According to NLC spokesperson Benson Upah, the operatives, described as “heavily armed,” broke into the second floor and looted the bookshop, taking away hundreds of books and other publications. The operatives claimed they were searching for seditious materials related to the #EndBadGovernance protests.
The Department of State Services (DSS) has denied any involvement in the raid.
In response, Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), stated that the DSS’s denial is insufficient and likened the incident to a similar invasion on February 28, 1988, when the NLC secretariat was raided under a previous military regime. He criticized the invasion as an attempt to silence NLC leaders for criticizing the police’s treatment of #EndBadGovernance protesters.
Falana condemned such actions in a democratic setting, recalling past instances of repression and calling for an investigation. He emphasized that the denial by the DSS does not absolve them of responsibility and urged the IGP to conduct a thorough inquiry to identify the perpetrators of the invasion.
