Following the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II’s claim during a visit to Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu that the Bini founded Lagos, Fani-Kayode expressed disagreement.

In response to the Oba of Benin’s assertion that historical records indicate the Bini as the founders of Lagos, Fani-Kayode argued against this narrative.

“Those asserting that the Bini founded Lagos are engaging in historical revisionism and spreading misinformation,” Fani-Kayode stated. “Lagos was NOT founded by the Bini; it was founded by the Yoruba.”

Fani-Kayode refuted claims that Lagos is a “no man’s land,” emphasizing that Lagos is distinctly Yoruba.

He criticized what he referred to as “self-serving and revisionist propaganda” surrounding the origin of Lagos, urging an end to the dissemination of inaccurate information that could mislead younger generations and deny the people of Lagos their true history and identity.
