Fatal Assault Claims Life Of 70-Year-Old Butcher In Ibadan

A tragic incident unfolded in Ibadan, Oyo State, as reports emerge of the death of a 70-year-old butcher, known as Yekeen Alaja, following a violent altercation. The unfortunate event occurred on Thursday, May 16, at the Moniya Abattoir in the Akinyele Local Government Area.

According to sources cited by Punch, the altercation escalated when Mutiu Balogun, a fellow butcher also known as Mutiu Iroko, aged 47, allegedly assaulted Alaja. Eyewitnesses recounted that the dispute erupted during the afternoon within the butchers’ market premises.

Musiliu Alaja, a family member of the deceased, narrated, “There was a misunderstanding between the suspect and the victim’s younger brother, one Yisau Alaja. So, the suspect went to lodge a complaint to the deceased as the head of the family around the market, and instead of the suspect to calmly state his position, he started raining curses and abusive words. This later generated an argument.”

“The deceased cautioned him, but instead of him maintaining decorum, he bounced back and started punching the deceased until he collapsed,” Musiliu Alaja added. Yekeen Alaja was swiftly rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His body has been transferred to the morgue.

Expressing sorrow over the incident, another eyewitness remarked, “The issue wouldn’t have generated a controversy if they had listened to other traders who were trying to resolve the matter. Now, it has claimed one life. May God repose his soul.”

Authorities have taken action in response to the incident. Mutiu Iroko has been apprehended by a combined team of Amotekun operatives and the police from the Moniya Divisional Police Headquarters for further investigation.
