Daniel Ndukwe, the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, conveyed this somber news via an official statement shared on Wednesday morning. The accident transpired when a bus, carrying eighteen passengers and sporting a Bauchi number plate DAS 215 XA, collided with the fence owned by Maduka Maduka before erupting into flames.

The collision’s impact, compounded by the ensuing blaze, resulted in the loss of sixteen lives, while miraculously, two individuals survived the ordeal. Ndukwe disclosed that preliminary investigations suggest the bus was speeding, leading to a loss of control and the subsequent collision with the fence.

In the statement, Ndukwe remarked, “The Enugu State Police Command wishes to inform the public that a solitary fatal motor accident occurred today, April 30, 2024, around 5:20 p.m., at Ekwegbe, along Enugu/Opi/Nsukka Road, claiming the lives of yet-to-be-identified fourteen males and two females who were burnt beyond recognition.”

He added, “The accident involves an eighteen-seater white-colored Toyota Hummer bus with a Bauchi State commercial registration number DAS 215 XA and the inscription ‘Masha Allah,’ said to have been driven at high speed, lost control, and plunged into the fence of Maduka University along the road.”

“An initial investigation reveals that the vehicle unfortunately burst into flames, burning beyond recognition the sixteen deceased individuals, who were taken to the hospital and confirmed dead. However, two other passengers were rescued and taken to the hospital for medical attention by police officers, soldiers, and public-spirited citizens who immediately responded to the incident.”

Additional inquiry led by the PPRO uncovered that the vehicle was transporting vegetables, food items, and passengers’ belongings on its journey from Enugu towards Nsukka. Nevertheless, specific details regarding the vehicle’s departure point and final destination remain unclear.

Ndukwe appealed to the public to provide any pertinent information that could aid in identifying the victims. He expressed profound sorrow over the tragic occurrence and the loss of lives.
