The tariff adjustment, approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), comes in response to rising operational costs faced by telecom operators.
In a statement released on Wednesday, FCCPC Chief Executive Mr. Tunji Bello acknowledged the economic challenges impacting the telecom industry but stressed that consumer interests must remain a top priority.
“We recognize the pressures the NCC has faced over the years to approve tariff increases due to escalating operational costs. However, we commend their measured approach in balancing industry sustainability with consumer protection,” the statement read.
The FCCPC praised the NCC for approving a 50% tariff adjustment, which is notably lower than the over 100% increase initially proposed by operators, and for linking the hike to improvements in service quality.
The Commission also reiterated the need for transparency in pricing, directing operators to ensure all tariffs are clear, straightforward, and free from hidden charges or complexities.
“Operators must disclose all critical details upfront, including cost, validity period, and plan inclusions,” the FCCPC stated.
Addressing longstanding consumer complaints, the FCCPC called for immediate action to resolve issues such as network congestion, dropped calls, inconsistent internet speeds, unusual data depletion, and poor service delivery.
“It is non-negotiable that telecom operators prioritize measurable and visible improvements in network reliability, speed, accessibility, and customer support. The tariff increase must translate into enhanced services for consumers who rely on telecommunications for personal and business needs,” the Commission concluded.
