The arrears, which had accumulated since 2019, had created ongoing friction between NiMet management and its staff, causing repeated confrontations with labor unions. Earlier this year, the unions had planned to strike on May 20, 2024, due to the unpaid wages. However, the threat of industrial action was averted thanks to intervention from the House Committee on Aviation Technology and its Senate counterpart.
A resolution was reached on May 19, 2024, during a special session led by House Committee Chairman Abiodun Akinlade, with representatives from NiMet and the unions present.
NiMet’s Director-General, Prof. Charles Anosike, expressed his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for authorizing the payment of the arrears. He praised the President for his worker-friendly stance and acknowledged the contributions of several key figures, including Aviation and Aerospace Development Minister Festus Keyamo, SAN, and committee chairs Abiodun Akinlade and Senator Abdulfatai Buhari.
Anosike urged NiMet staff and unions to show their appreciation by continuing to work diligently and helping NiMet fulfill its mandate.
In response, the NiMet Unions Joint Action Committee thanked Tinubu, Keyamo, and other officials for resolving the issue. They noted that the payment of the arrears has alleviated significant financial burdens and renewed their commitment to serving the nation effectively.
