Minister of Works David Umahi emphasized the need to resolve the longstanding negotiations during a courtesy visit from the new Managing Director of Julius Berger Plc, Dr. Pier Lubasch, alongside outgoing MD Dr. Lars Richter.
This ultimatum follows previous threats from Umahi to revoke the contract awarded in 2018 under former President Muhammadu Buhari. While the Kaduna-Zaria section is complete and the Zaria-Kano section is nearly finished, the Abuja-Kaduna section has only achieved 27 percent progress over six years.
At a recent event, Umahi criticized Julius Berger for delaying mobilization despite federal funding approval, stating that the hold-up is causing significant hardship for road users and damaging the government’s reputation. He remarked, “If Berger is not progressing, let’s find others who can complete the job within a manageable timeframe.” He noted that the project’s costs have escalated from N710 billion to N740 billion due to these delays, which he described as a frustrating “ping-pong game.
