Following the signing of the amended Student Loan bill into law by President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government is set to kick off a pilot phase of the student loan scheme, focusing on applicants from public tertiary institutions.

According to Nasir Ayitogo, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, this development was confirmed on Wednesday. Ayitogo highlighted that the pilot scheme would initially involve students from federal and state universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

President Tinubu is expected to appoint key personnel, including a chairperson, managing director, and two executive directors, to oversee the executive management team of the scheme, as outlined in the provisions of the Student Loans (Access to Higher Education) Act (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill, 2024.

Ayitogo emphasized the necessity of these appointments before the commencement of the scheme’s implementation. He noted that the appointment of a chairperson by the President is crucial for the effective launch of the program.

The revised scheme encompasses both public and private institutions, although the pilot phase specifically targets public institutions. Eligible students from federal and state universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education are encouraged to apply for the loan once the scheme is operational, provided they meet the stipulated requirements.
