Federal Government Orders Submission Of Matriculation Lists From Universities Over Fake Degree Issues

This directive is part of the measures recommended by a committee formed to address the issue of fake degree mills. The committee was established in response to an investigative report by Daily Nigerian, which exposed the operations of degree mills in Benin Republic.

The report highlighted how easily degrees could be obtained and used for official purposes, leading the Nigerian government to impose a ban on the accreditation and evaluation of degrees from Benin Republic and Togo.

The Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, emphasized that those holding fake degrees from both domestic and international institutions would be removed from the system. In a memo to JAMB dated July 15, 2024, the ministry outlined the need for strict adherence to these new regulations.

The memo stated: “Following the exposure of certificate racketeering involving foreign institutions, particularly in Cotonou, Benin Republic, an inter-ministerial committee was set up to investigate and propose solutions. The committee’s report has been approved for implementation.”

The education ministry has mandated that all tertiary institutions conduct their admissions through JAMB’s Central Admissions Processing System and submit matriculation lists as specified.
