However, a letter dated November 1, signed by Mrs. R. G. Ilyasu on behalf of the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, instructed the council to retract the appointment. The ministry referenced an agreement made on October 25 with the Honourable Minister of State for Education, which stipulated that no new appointments should be made without first addressing grievances within the university community.
The letter stated, “Following your meeting with the Honourable Minister of State for Education on October 25, it was agreed that no appointments should proceed without reconciling with aggrieved parties in the University Community. It has come to the Ministry’s attention that your Council appointed a Vice-Chancellor without the participation of the Ministry’s representative, internal council members, and other stakeholders, which shows a disregard for constituted authority and violates established protocols.”
The ministry declared all recent appointments null and void and requested that the council suspend any further appointments until the new Honourable Minister of Education assumes office. The letter was also forwarded to the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission for additional action.
