The Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziaq Salako, announced that the Ministry, in collaboration with the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, will commence periodic reviews of the plans of both international and indigenous oil companies. This initiative aims to ensure these companies remain committed to ending routine gas flaring by the year 2030.
Speaking at the national stakeholders’ engagement meeting on methane mitigation and reduction in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector in Abuja, Salako highlighted the urgency of addressing methane emissions. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, poses a significant threat to both current and future generations, as well as to climate protection goals. Reduction of methane emissions, particularly within the oil and gas sector, is crucial for strengthening climate action and unlocking various benefits, including improvements in public health, food security, and economic development.
Salako emphasized the practical steps being taken to tackle methane emissions in the country. He mentioned the collaborative efforts of government institutions that have resulted in the development of methane guidelines. Additionally, he reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to reviewing the plans of oil companies periodically to ensure alignment with the goal of ending routine gas flaring by 2030.
