The 16 buses were allocated to the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO). Ekpo emphasized that the distribution of these CNG-powered buses is part of the governmentās strategy to promote cleaner, more affordable alternatives to traditional fuel.
āI am pleased to reaffirm the Federal Governmentās commitment to addressing the transportation challenges faced by our citizens and transport operators,ā Ekpo said. āThis initiative, led by the Presidential CNG Initiative in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Transportation, aims to promote CNG as a cleaner and more affordable fuel alternative.ā
He further explained that the buses are not just vehicles, but a substantial investment in eco-friendly transportation. They reflect the governmentās commitment to alleviating the burden on Nigerian commuters and transport operators.
āThe transportation sector plays a vital role in Nigeriaās economy,ā Ekpo added, acknowledging the strain rising fuel costs have placed on mobility. āTo address this, the Federal Government has prioritized CNG, a cleaner and more cost-effective fuel. This is central to our Decade of Gas initiative, which taps into Nigeriaās vast natural gas reserves to support sustainable development, energy security, and economic growth.ā
With Nigeriaās proven gas reserves exceeding 209 trillion cubic feet, Ekpo noted that the country is well-positioned to lead the global energy transition by using natural gas both as a transition fuel and as a long-term energy source.
