Federal Workers To Be First In Line For Student Loans, Announces Government

The Federal Government has announced that the initial phase of the Student Loan program will be officially available for students enrolled in federal institutions once their institutions have completed the necessary data uploads.

Akintunde Sawyerr, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), made this announcement during a press conference on Monday, ahead of the application portal’s opening on Friday.

He stated that up to 1.2 million students across federal tertiary institutions will be able to access the student loan in this first phase.

Sawyerr emphasized that the loan application process has been streamlined to ensure easy access for all eligible students in federal tertiary institutions. Prospective applicants can begin their application process starting from May 24, 2024.

The loan is available to all students in government tertiary institutions and will be rolled out in phases, starting with federal institutions before extending to state institutions.

“We encourage all students in federal institutions to take advantage of this opportunity to secure the required financial assistance for their education. Applicants must submit their applications as early as possible to ensure timely processing,” Sawyerr said.

He added that this initiative is a key component of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at providing financial assistance for obligatory fees and stipends to needy students, enabling them to pursue their educational goals without immediate financial burdens.

The interest-free loan program offers flexible repayment options, which commence two years after completing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), provided the individual has secured employment.

The Fund will cover 100 percent of institutional fees directly to the institutions of learning while also providing monthly stipends to students based on their school’s active periods.

Key features of the student loan include no physical contact between the loan applicant and NELFUND, a user-friendly loan application portal, comprehensive online support for applicants, and affordable and flexible repayment plans.

Sawyerr also mentioned that they are collaborating with various insurance companies to address cases where loans go bad and working with security agencies to handle instances of deliberate fraud.
