The tribunal’s decision on September 20 removed Abba Yusuf, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) candidate, as the state’s governor.

The panel also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to retract Yusuf’s issued certificate of return.

Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was affirmed as the duly elected governor of Kano. He secured 1,019,602 votes, defeating Gawuna, who received 890,705 votes in the March 11 governorship election.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the election results, Gawuna and the APC submitted a petition contesting Yusuf’s win.

During his remarks on Channels Television in an interview on Friday, Falana emphasized that judges should not penalize voters due to errors made by INEC officials.

“We are urging our judges to consider justice, substantial justice, in a manner that does not penalize voters for INEC’s errors,” Falana stated.

He highlighted the recent events in Kano where 165,000 votes were invalidated because they were allegedly unmarked by INEC.

“As a voter, my responsibility is to cast my vote in the ballot box. I have no way of knowing if it’s marked by INEC or not,” Falana explained.
