The Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, has achieved a significant milestone in combating kidnapping, with the rescue of over 1,000 victims without succumbing to ransom demands, according to National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu. This announcement came as Ribadu welcomed 22 students and staff from the Federal University of Gusau, Zamfara State, who were rescued from abduction on Sunday, following a harrowing incident at the institution last year.

Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Mani Mummuni, joined in sympathizing with the affected families and the university community, urging swift action from security agencies to ensure the safe return of the remaining kidnapped students.

In response, the Zamfara State Police Command reassured the public of ongoing efforts, deploying additional tactical teams for search and rescue operations. The police detailed the September 2023 attack, during which armed bandits abducted students from rented apartments near the university campus.

Out of the initial victims, seven were rescued, two escaped, leaving 22 still held captive until their recent liberation in a coordinated effort led by the National Counter-Terrorism Centre.

Expressing gratitude for the successful rescue operation, Ribadu lauded the security forces for their dedication and emphasized the government’s commitment to securing the release of all unlawfully held captives without yielding to ransom demands.

This latest rescue adds to a series of successful operations in recent months, marking a decisive step in the government’s efforts to combat mass abductions. Ribadu urged the rescued students and staff to remain resilient in the face of adversity.

In a similar vein, the military had earlier rescued 137 students from Kaduna State without paying ransom, underscoring the government’s firm stance against negotiating with criminals.

Ribadu also extended appreciation to the parents of the rescued victims for their patience and support throughout the ordeal, while praising security agencies for their sacrifices in ensuring the nation’s safety.

The National Coordinator of the NCTC, Maj-Gen Adamu Laka (retd.), provided insight into the rescue operation, highlighting the meticulous care taken in examining and treating the rescued individuals.

As the nation continues to confront security challenges, the successful rescue operations serve as a beacon of hope, reinforcing the government’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens and ensuring their well-being.
